Return to LGS

Earlier this month I was lucky enough to be invited back to my old school, Leicester Grammar School, to take a workshop and play an evening recital.  It was great to see so many of the staff still the same as when I went there, especially Messers. Chris Jeans and David Whittle of the music department.  I had heard good things about the standard of playing there and it is fair to say that I was blown away by it.  Their approach and discipline towards playing was simply astonishing; it is no wonder Chris’ Youth Brass 2000 (my old brass band) are doing so well this year.  I challenged the audience in the evening recital, with a programme contrasting contemporary show pieces (Xenakis, Scelsi, Star, Carter) with nineteenth-century Romantic songs….they coped admirably and I hope I have opened their minds to music they may otherwise have avoided.
