Antoine Courtois and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) have teamed up to make it possible for me to perform a lunchtime recital, followed by a masterclass at 1.15pm in the Dora Stoutzker Hall on January 31st. Having driven past the new building on numerous occasions, I’m excited about seeing inside. People I have spoken to are really raving about the place and it is producing some wonderful young players.
The recital offers a snapshot into one of the concepts behind my forthcoming CD: the juxtaposition of modern, unaccompanied works with Romantic lyricism. Symphoncally this approach has had a great deal of success, with conductors such as Pierre Boulez prefacing Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 with Webern’s Opus 6, Six Pieces for Orchestra. In order for this to work on a smaller scale, it has been necessary to make the transition between the contrasted works negligible, hence the title of the recital: ‘On the other hand -a recital in three thirds’. I hope to see some of you there, more information can be found by clicking the link in the text.
